Common printing paper can be divided into four main categories: uncoated paper, coated paper, lightweight coated paper, and specialty paper.
when printingFull Colors Leaflets we are often asked about the type of paper? How many grams of paper do you need??When you first encounter terms like 128g gloss art paper, 80g woodfree paper, and 157g matt art paper, it can be overwhelming. Today, we're here to help you understand these different types of paper and their uses.
The grammage of paper represents the basic unit of paper weight. This basic weight is measured in grams per square meter (g/m²). For example, 128g glossy paper means that each square meter of the paper weighs 128 grams.
A method of measuring thickness in millimeters is referred to as "gauge." One gauge represents a specific thickness measurement.=0.01mm。
常用的條數來說,1 mm = 1000μm (micrometer)≒100 items.
Why use gauge instead of the internationally recognized millimeters (mm)?Because paper is very thin, usually less than 1mm thick, using gauge can avoid confusion caused by too many decimal points.
In mainland China, "coated paper" is referred to as 銅版紙, while in Hong Kong, it is known as gloss art paper . This type of paper is widely used in the printing industry and is well-known in Hong Kong. However, it is less familiar in mainland China due to a lack of communication between the regions. The English term for 粉紙 is "Art Paper," which is a colloquial name for this imported product. This type of paper was first developed by the British in the mid-19th century as a coated paper. By mixing fine white clay and other materials into a coating and evenly applying it to the surface of the base paper (either on one side or both sides), high-quality printing paper is produced. The process is similar to women applying powder to their faces, hence the name 粉紙 (art paper).
Matte paper is similar to glossy paper but does not have the same vibrant colors and is less reflective under sunlight. Due to its lower reflectivity and better ink absorption compared to glossy paper, many people choose it for high-end printed materials. Additionally, this paper is more suitable for readable and information-rich printed materials. Commonly used matte papers include 128g and 157g.
Book paper is an uncoated writing paper. Common photocopy paper is often made from book paper, which is thicker and lighter due to its higher fiber content, and has excellent ink absorption properties, making it ideal for writing and printing. Additionally, its soft texture makes it suitable for books that require long reading periods. If you need to produce printed materials that require writing or text, such as forms, raffle tickets, envelopes, and letterheads, book paper is your best choice. Commonly used woodfree paper include 80g, 100g, 120g, and 140g.
